What is Skiptonweb?

Ah, now you're asking... www.skiptonweb.co.uk is a website dedicated to the town of Skipton, North Yorkshire, UK - "The Gateway to the Dales". It's a website designed to be a complete, free, independent and unbiased resource of information to tourists (and to local residents) who are looking for information about the town of Skipton. We don't charge for links out. If you have a site that is relevant (and you're not a buffoon), you get a link. For free. Simple as that.

What do you mean 'unbiased'?

Ok, obviously, since we built and maintain the site, it has some bias. It contains our opinions. What we mean is that the site is not built on bias. It's not run by a committee or a group that has a vested interest in excluding outsiders. This site was designed from the very beginning to involve (and to link to) everyone.

Show me the money

There is no money involved. We run this for free. Links out are free. Yes, this site costs us time and money to run, and we stand that ourselves. Frankly, we run this site at a loss. The only benefits we get are good karma and words of praise and encouragement. Plus the fact that every so often, somebody with money sees this site then calls us us and says "I'm impressed. And I have money. Would you build me a site, too, please?"

Why are you doing this?

We've always though that there should be a well-designed website providing people around the world with good, complete tourist information about Skipton. Until we started this site, back in 1998, we think it's fair to say that there wasn't. Maybe this site doesn't fulfil that criteria either, but at least we gave it a shot. Since then, without a doubt, no-one has built a better one for Skipton. In many ways we wish they would - then we'd be able to get on with other stuff.

So that's what we're doing. The SkiptonWeb mission brief (don't you just love it when people think their website merits a mission statement?) is this:

To create and maintain a resource of info (and links to further info) about the town of Skipton - without bias.

We list shops, pubs, restaurants, attractions, etc... that we think will be of interest to tourists. We list them all and, of course, if they have a website we link to it. But we don't just link to other websites. That would be ignoring half of the real world. We list the addresses and phone numbers of all the businesses and organisations in Skipton that we can find details for, whether or not they have a website. We're trying to make this an exhaustive directory of information on Skipton. Not just an exercise in linking to whatever other sites happen to exist. Not just a list of links to people who are in our gang. Not just a list of links to people who pay us for links.

But that's the least interesting thing about this website. What we really want to happen, what really excites us, is the idea that users instead of just sitting passively reading this stuff will actually get involved and will contribute more pages and more information so that this site will grow. This site isn't meant to be a brochure. This site is meant to be an interactive community. Something else, over and above what it is now the normal. Something wonderful. It's meant to be an on-line community of local residents. Most people simply don't know what we mean by that. Yet.

Who are you?

We are a web development company that happens to be based in Skipton. It's based in Skipton because we live here. Yes, this website does, incidentally, promote our web services.

Can I have a link?

If your website is in some way related to Skipton, and you aren't a buffoon, yes.

What don't you do?

SkiptonWeb does not accept any legal responsibility for problems arising from the possibility that information listed here can (will) contain errors. We do our best to keep pages up to date. If you've found an error in these pages, please tell us. But we do not accept any responsibility for users who do not double check all important facts. We strongly suggest that you double check all information with a second source. Give us a break.

Skiptonweb deplores and disassociates itself from the use of the internet to spread pornography. We will have nothing to do with it. Or software piracy. Or viruses, worms or any other associated stupidity.
