Gordale Scar - The Ascent
Many people go to Gordale Scar just to see this immense and impressive
sight. Some go as part of their Malham walk. Others who get there,
wishing to continue their walk to Seaty Hill or the Malham Tarn
area, suddenly find themselves awestruck by the seeming enormity
of the task above, and ahead. I have seen people trying...and giving
up; or having to wait around untill another party arrives to help
them continue and accomplish their route.
Here then, is the easy route, in pictures to help you on your way.

1.

Ground zero.
The most important decision is right at the start of
the face. Head for left of centre, and then, (if it's
there) cross over the stream, left to right, and aim
for the mid-point of the rock face. |
|
 |
2.
|
Head for the centre and take care, although
it's not as bad as it looks! About six feet above you
is a small gaping hole, place yourself below this, and
pull yourself up towards the right. |

At this point you have a choice of two
distinct ways up. In this instance "green" decides
to move further over to the right. This turns out to be
more difficult in the long run. Whereas, "red"
keeps in a straight line, finding it easier going. |
|
 |
4.
|
The middle way is both best and fastest.
See how "red" has eased ahead. |

 |
5.
|
It's relatively easy after this, just keep
in the middle of the two streams, and you can walk it
from here... |

...Until you reach the top...then you can
turn around and feel you've impressed the grockles you
left behind! |
