Stirton/Thorlby Villages
& Canal

A good country walk close to Skipton town. This takes you straight into the countryside and although it crosses three busy roads with heavy traffic, it is a level and pleasant two hour amble through sleepy villages and along the canalside. Complex but perfect. Just like me!

Distance: 4.75 miles (7.6 kilometres)
Time: About 2 hours.
Height: On the level.
Difficulty: Flat terrain for most of the journey, but 3 busy roads to cross, so not a walk if you are with small children.
Scenery: Two villages, a green lane and a long canal stretch.
Location: Park near the Railway Station on the hill opposite, by Quick-Fit, or the Morrisons Supermarket car park (payable).
Maps: OS. Explorer OL 2 Yorkshire Dales (South)

1
Opposite the Fire and Rail Stations in Skipton, is this (pictured) Carleton New Road.
Go up here until you reach the Canal.

Go over the canal bridge in front of you, and turn sharp left following the tow path all the way, passing the park, golf course and wood on your right, and the canal on your left.
2
On arriving here, (see picture) you must turn right as the Public Right of Way has been moved. Follow the new path with the wire fencing on your left, and leave the canal behind you.
3
Be very careful here. You must go through one double wooden gate onto the gravel track, (see picture) then turn immediately right. Do not continue across the marked route through the second double wood gate (past the sewer works)
4

Not very far away is this two stepped wood stile on the left (see picture) with an unfriendly wired top, and ill fitting top step.

Once across into the playing fields, you pass a sand pit (Long Jump) and a Relay Track. (Feel free to do a furlong dash)

Head for the far end of the field. As you arrive go towards the very left corner.

5

Here in the left bottom corner is this difficult to see wooden exit. (see picture)

Once through this, zig-zag right and left, seeking out the lowered fence. Scrabble over this, turn sharp right and make your way mostly forward into the Auction Mart road system.

6

At this point, the yellow arrows are mysterious in their position and indication. Far better to seek out the tarmac road furtherest to the right of the others, and follow it towards a good dry stone wall used by the Craven College next to a large plastic greenhouse.

Near these, over on the left of this road, seek out this gate and road sign combination, (see picture) and go through the solid single wood gate. Follow the well determined cut path as it weaves left, up, and then right.

7
From this green lane, things are decidedly more straightforward. As you make your way along, this huge storage unit looms up on your right (see picture) and the wood fencing gives way to an exit onto your left, with a wooden signpost. Go over a wood two stepped stile and carefully cross the busy road.
8
On the other side a little over to the left is the path's continuation signed by this post. (see picture). Go over the two stepped wooden stile. Now follow the murky overhung pathway all the way until you find a stile on your right.
9
Here (see picture) step over this wooden stile and head down the path past a row of hawthorns along a dip in the earth.
10
You are soon faced with a direction post pointing down the embankment, (see picture) follow this down and cross the busy road, (A59) then back up the fenced pedestrianised pathway on the other side.
11
Climb this two stepped wood stile, (see picture) and follow the gentle incline downwards through the lollygagging sheep.
12
Here you will arrive at a wide metal gate. (see picture) Once through, (please ensure the gate is well tethered shut) go up the incline and cross the busy A65. Head up the narrow road to Stirton, passing a low white milestone on the left corner of the junction for Gargrave/Stirton.
13

Enjoy the serenity of the village. Just before the crossroads, over on the left is the old dilapidated village stocks. (see picture)

Pass the village notice board and turn left at the crossroads. Continue down this road towards the next village of Thorlby.

14

Along here, in Thorlby, is Manor Farm on the left, continue forward at this village crossroads.

You will finally end up back on the A65 here (see picture) where you can confirm your bearings with the roadsigns (on the left of the picture.)
Skipton left; and Settle, Kendal and Gargrave towards the right.

15

Cross the road and about 10 yards to the right of the road signs, is the access you need. Now go past some derelict buildings on your right, and cross this footbridge over the canal. (see picture)

Continue to keep the canal on your left, and enjoy the scenery and wildlife all along this towpath back to Skipton.

16
There is a point along the towpath where you are forced out onto this gravel pathway, (see picture) for a few hundred yards, just keep going ...
17

This is the entry point back onto the towpath. (see picture) Take this access and continue along here, go beneath the underpass of the A629 (T).

You will find yourself back at the first canal bridge you crossed, but on the right side. Turn right and go back down here towards the Station, and your car.

18
No toilets along this walk.
