Appletreewick
Known locally as 'Aptrick', this pretty little village is situated on
the eastern side of Wharfedale, two miles south east of Burnsall. The village prospered from 1300 when Bolton Priory acquired its manor, huge sheep ranges, and the valuable lead mines. Later Charters were granted for markets and a fair which remained important right up until the railway's impact in the 19th C. The Tudor High Hall was restored By Sir William Craven who was born in one of the existing cottages. He became the Sheriff and Lord Mayor of London at the beginning of the 17th C. |
