Tarn Moor Memorial Woodland

January/March 2006

I asked Wendy Pratt who looks after this woodland burial ground to give me some information on what is fast becoming the most popular form of burial.

Tarn Moor Memorial Woodland

The burial ground, on Grassington Road, is part of The Tarn Moor Estate. Tarn Moor Trust, a charity with a limited portfolio of land and property, which uses its income to benefit the people of Skipton. In line with this objective, Skipton residents are entitled to a 25% discount on plots.

We opened our Memorial Woodland in November 2002
The site has investors from as far as York, Hull and Barnsley as well as being a facility for Craven People. We now have a PPC Permit, allowing us to bury pets. To date we have over 100 interments/scatterings and 150 reservations, and are happy to discuss any requirements with you or your relatives.

In the event of you are wishing to use Tarn Moor Memorial Woodland, here are a few points that you might find helpful:

The concept of Tarn Moor is to marry the development of a predominantly Oak wood as part of a burial ground. Initial planting has taken place on a virgin field. Burials take place within this area. We do not plant ‘a tree per person’

Any request may be made through Wendy or a funeral director, and dealt with sympathetically and with dignity.

Pets may only be buried in the pet area or in the allocated pet/people area

I am available to take a personal, non-religious service at the graveside if required : Prices are from £60.00

You may wish to use our field shelter (an industrial gazebo). This is particularly useful in inclement weather, but also makes a secluded private focal area even on a fine day. A small charge of £25.00 applies.
The Meadow area for the scattering of ashes is divided into Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter sections.

Each Burial will be recorded accurately with a microchip identification system.
A separate physical memorial area is in the form of large stones for engravings.

Chipboard coffins are totally acceptable, but with wooden handles and name plate.
I have an abundance of literature regarding ‘Eco-friendly’ coffins & containers, ie. Cardboard, wicker, bamboo, paper fibreboard, etc. if the need arises.
We wish to discourage hard woods and embalming.

I soften the grave surround with Ivy, laurel and hedgerow foliage.
I am happy to fulfil any personal requests for alternative grave surround, ie. Hay, flowers, foliage etc.

A list of wild flowers, that will flourish in our soil, is available for families who wish to plant around the burial plot.

You are welcome to visit the burial site at any time, or alternatively meet you on site.

We have a woodland management plan in place, which means we will plant initially, 70 dedicated Sessile Oak trees surrounded by a nursery crop of Downy Birch.

The Woodland offers a ‘Return to Nature’ for those who wish to be buried with trees, amongst birds, mammals & wild flowers. This new woodland will provide a living memorial, one that will offer pleasure & benefits to all future generations.
This facility is for all religious & secular groups and includes areas for pets and also people who wish to be buried with their own pet/companion.

Tarn Moor Memorial Woodland is a member of the Association of Natural Burial Grounds and abides by their Code of Practice.
