Dales Jam

May 2004

If you love jazz, and want to play or learn to......the place to go is the Linton Institute, on most Monday evenings..

Since the beginning of December 2003 Linton Institute has been home to Dales Jam, a gathering of people keen to learn how to play both written and improvised jazz. The age range of current members is from eight to about sixty.

The Musical Director, teacher, composer and musician Richard Ormrod, takes a two and a half hour workshop, for which he provides written music with parts for all to play.

The current membership is between fifteen and twenty people, though attendance varies from week to week.

The band meets most Monday evenings at the Linton Institute, but check before turning up. All ages, abilities and instruments are welcome. Budding writers and arrangers please apply.

For further details call Ian Moulding on 01756 752240 or E-mail him at Ian.Moulding@CODA.com or visit www.bradfordmba.org/dalesjam

Also...

I asked Richard to talk me through his accomplishments, and hectic merry bands...this is what the Lightning Conductor had to say...

Richard Ormrod plays soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones, Bb, alto and bass clarinets and concert flute, accordion, piano, guitar, steel pan and various made-up instruments, as well as toys pinched from his 16 month old son, Louis Elvin.

He performs/composes/arranges for various projects, including dance, film and the theatre. Living in Leeds for the past nine years, he uses jazz and improvisational vocabulary to explore a worldwide range of material, employing Afro-American and Caribbean through African, Arabic/Jewish and European folk/pop to Indian and oriental influences, as well as the broad palette of western art music, film and show tunes etc. He regularly performs this music in a variety of groups including reed quartets/sextets, large (8+) ensembles and his own jazz quartet and trio. his current 'baby' is RASHOMON, a variable-size ensemble that utilizes musical cut ups, conduction and mutiny to manipulate a sizeable range of material (see above). As assistant MD in Blackburn’s community jazz orchestra (The Jam Factory) he composes/arranges for, and conducts, an ensemble of 30+ Lancs and York's musicians, which regularly employs ‘star’ guests. Recently, there was interest expressed on this side of the Pennines ...and Richard now directs a smaller similar group, currently 'Dales Jam' rehearsing in Linton.

Richard Ormrod - reeds. everything he owns. conduction. slightly embarrassing mentalism. “One of the grittiest improvisers in the north” - Sand and Gravel Monthly.
