Exotic Species

September 2003

It always amazes me just how attractive and colourful some animals can be. I suppose that's what draws people into keeping exotic animals. Certainly when photographing them I was awe struck by their strangeness, and in some instances, their potential dangerousness.

There is now a growing trend towards getting an exotic animal, rather than your 'normal' cat, or puppy...I only hope that if they do aquire them...people will treat them with respect, and won't get bored with it after a few months.

There will always be those who have to have the different, the unusual, and the exotic. This is fine when it's to do with cars, clothes, food, and holidays, but may not be a good idea when it comes to animals. In some circumstances, it may be very dangerous. Exotic pets may include the more commonly seen exotics like reptiles, ferrets, various birds, parotts and budgies etc. Other exotics kept as pets might include various dangerous or rare species of fish, other less common reptiles, insects, etc.

But is having an exotic species a good idea? For the average (and even the person who thinks he or she may be above average) individual, no, it is not.

Before bringing any animal into the house, you need to be prepared for it: emotionally, physically and financially.

  • Make sure that you can properly maintain the animal for anywhere from a few years to decades.
  • Make sure that the animal is legal ( rare raptors, and certain wildlife are illegal )
  • That you have a veterinarian at hand that is versed in the medical care of that species.
  • Do not get an animal because it is unique or rare.
  • Do not get an animal because it makes you look good.
  • Get an animal because you know you are capable of giving it what it needs based on the species.

Best to leave many exotics to the wilds and the zoos.
