This Saves Lives - Data Link

Skipton and Craven Lions Club -
Data Link 'Message in a Bottle’
Emergency Information Pack

Feb 2004

This is a voluntary scheme intended for use by anyone who feels vulnerable while living at home.

The scheme provides the emergency services and other professionals with the vital details of any illness or allergy and the name of someone to contact should they be called to the person’s home as a result of sudden illness or personal accident.

Details of the individual are stored in a plastic container, ie. ‘The Bottle’ that is kept in the fridge. This is considered to be a place as opposed to a cupboard, in each individual house that is easily found by the emergency services.

In the ‘Bottle’ will be a form to complete, and two small stickers. Once completed, the form ‘the Message’ is put in the ‘Bottle’ which is then put in the fridge. The two small stickers are unique to the scheme and known to the local emergency services and other caring organisations. One must be put on the fridge door and the other inside the house but near the front door, eg. in the hall where it can be easily seen.

Our project is based on an initiative originally suggested by John Hughes, a community policeman in Crossgates, Fifeshire, Scotland. The scheme got under way around 1995. Since then amongst other organisations it has been has been implemented by Lions Clubs on Tayside, Cumbria and Lancashire. Kendal Lions initiated their scheme in 1999, followed by Lancaster and Morecambe Lions in 2001.

The small ‘Bottle’, which is only 4" high, is available from Ambulance stations, Surgeries and Chemists,

Skipton and Craven Lions Club with the support of our local emergency services is setting up the scheme in the Craven area. Its cost will be funded from our own Charity account and from monies raised at future events.

Participation in the scheme is free to anyone who feels that it will be benefit him or her.

What is Data Link?
Data Link is a voluntary scheme for anyone living at home who might be reassured to know that essential information would be readily available to the Emergency Services should they suffer an accident or sudden illness.

How does the Scheme Work?
Your details are stored in a clearly labelled plastic bottle, which is kept inside your fridge. Two matching labels, known to the Emergency Services and other care agencies are displayed in your house, one on the outside of your fridge door, and the other on the inside of your front door (placed so that it is not visible from the outside).
