Skipton Farmers Market

August 2005

Local Craven producers now take part in a regular Farmer's Market in Skipton. The market is held on the first Sunday of every month and takes place in the Canal Basin area of Coach Street, Skipton.

The market is supported by the Integrated Rural Development Project working in partnership with the local councils, trade associations and Northern Dales Farmers' Markets. The Skipton market follows the hugely successful farmers' markets launched in Settle and Grassington, last year.

The markets are being run in conjunction with Northern Dales Farmers' Markets which ensures that enough producers will take part to make the market commercially viable. However one of the main aims of the market is to support local enterprise and attract Craven based producers, giving them the opportunity to sell direct to the public in Skipton. There are up to 30 stalls available at the market selling foodstuffs, meat, fish, candles, cakes and local grown fruit, vegetables and flowers.

Paula Vickers, events Officer for the Integrated Rural Development Project who helps organise the markets said:-
“The markets we started in Settle and Grassington last year have been a great success and we have had good feedback from both retailers and customers. The markets are very much a two way shopping experience and a fantastic opportunity for local producers to sell their goods direct to the customer.”

Councillor Paul English, Portfolio Holder for Building A Prosperous District With Thriving Market Towns stated:-
“Farmers' markets are an important way of helping local businesses and retailers by bringing more people to the area and making them aware of what is available locally. We’re hoping the farmers' market in Skipton will be as equally successful as those in Grassington and Settle and attract even more people to the canal basin area of the town.”

Produce should be locally grown or produced where 'Local' means within 40 miles of the market, though preference where possible will be given to the closest producers until the market is established. Stalls must be staffed by someone who is directly involved in growing, raising or producing the goods for sale.

Anyone interested in having a stall or would like to find out more information should contact Paula Vickers Tel : 01756 730403
