Grassington Dickensian Fayre
Saturdays in December 2003
Over in Grassington, the word is that you can now get all dressed up
like Little Dorrit, and get away with it...though why that is, was a mystery
to me Edwin?...until I wandered over there in my charabanc and took a
few pictures to hang on the wall.
The event seemed well organised, having plenty of stalls and sites to
see. Lots of characters from the Sketches from Boz that would fill a book...
but I don't remember a 12 foot high emu in there? Our mutual friend perhaps?
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it
was the age of paying vast amounts of money for parking, (£5 park
and ride) which at this time of year, (charity and good cheer), seemed
to put a Twist on the whole proceedings? These are Hard Times...so I drove
on and parked legally for free, elsewhere. But then I am a bit of an old
Scrooge !
Even though the weather was Bleak, there were coach loads...
coming from everywhere; descending on this tiny village in the dales.
No doubt they had Great Expectations...but for whatever reason, (probably
having the dickens of a good time ?) people every year, just seem to come
flocking back... for More Sir! Please Sir!

Comments Welcome :-
Quite a reasonable article on our Dickensian, even if
a little patronising. To object to paying £5.00 for a park and ride
is parsimonious in the extreme - a car and passengers £5.00 is hardly
expensive. How do you think the event is financed? It costs about £30,000
to stage the Dickensian - coaches for park and ride each cost about
£300 per day. Insurance for the event is around £2000. Street artists
don't come cheap. Portable loo's are about £1500. We distribute 45,000
programmes, distribution costs another £1000 odd. I think you are under
the apprehension that all these things are given, and freely drop out
of the sky. You smugly state that you move on and park for free - congratulations,
people like you we can do without, as this only clogs up other routes
and causes disharmony by probably blocking someone's access to their
property! No, sir. If cannot be positive, then say nothing If we do
have the urge to come again, let me know, and I'll send you the £5.00
for your parking. And for information, we had 1500 cars parked correctly
each of the first two weeks, and 138 coaches each Saturday.
Regards,
Co-coordinator Grassington Dickensian Fesrtival
