Essential Information
|
|
Accident and Emergency
Unit |
| The nearest accident and emergency unit is at Airedale
General Hospital, which is about 5 miles down the road towards Keighley, and clearly
signposted. Skipton General Hospital does not have an accident and
emergency facility. |
Chemists |
| The Tesco store has a pharmacy inside. The Boots
dispensing Chemist is not in the High St branch, but at the Fisher
Medical Centre, which is at the back of the Coach St car park. |
Citizen's Advice
|
| The Skipton CAB is on Newmarket St, in the old Church.
Good staff. |
Disabled Access |
| There is good access to the TIC, which is on ground
level. The Town Hall has a ramp for access. Skipton TIC has a leaflet detailing
facilities for disabled visitors. For more information call the Skipton Disability
Information Service office. |
Local |
| The public library is on the High St, close to the
Black Horse pub. It has the usual fiction and non-fiction sections, CD's and videos etc.
There is a section of local interest books covering local history, guidebooks on walking
and touring the dales, and Yorkshire in general. Upstairs there is a good reference
(non-lending) library. The staff are very helpful. Closed Tuesdays, and from 12:30 on
Saturdays. |
Local Newspaper |
| The local newspaper is the Craven Herald and Pioneer,
which comes out weekly, every Friday. It is actually printed in Bradford nowadays, but the
main office for the paper is still on Skipton High Street. The Herald is supposedly
the last English local paper to have no news on the front page, just adverts. The paper
covers Skipton and much of the surrounding area, with articles and ads relating to Settle,
Gargrave, Addingham, Grassington and Bolton Abbey. Price 40p. We've added a link here to
their website, where you can check out this week's stories. |
Local Radio |
| Fresh AM Radio is based in Skipton, and broadcasts news,
music, weather and traffic reports for the surrounding area. Frequency is 1413 KHz AM
(MW). It's a commercial station. We have a link here to their website. |
Maps of the area |
| A good streetmap of Skipton (the Official Town Map) is
issued by the TIC, at 40p. Probably the most useful Map of the immediate area around
Skipton is the Ordance Survey Outdoor Leisure Series No 2 - Yorkshire Dales, Southern and
Western, ISBN 0319260836. |
Money |
| Currency exchange is available in Sunwin House (the
Co-op), and a couple of travel agents on the High St. Failing that, try the banks. There
are ATM machines on the outside of all the high St banks, also inside
Tesco and outside Morrison's. |
Museum |
| Is in the Town Hall, at the top of the High St.
|
Opening Hours, Holidays
|
| Skipton still has traditional half day closing on
Tuesdays. This means that the smaller shops will tend to be shut, or close early, on a
Tuesday. Chains and supermarkets keep normal hours. The Esso garage on Keighley Road is
open 24 hours , and has some basic groceries. There is a Town Gala
here sometime in the summer. Bank Holiday weekends in Skipton tend to be very busy.
|
Police |
| Skipton police station is at the junction of Otley Rd
and Otley St. In an emergency dial 999. For normal enquiries 793377.

Middletown area, and on Broughton Rd. |
Toilets |
| There are public conveniences in both the Town Hall car park and the Coach
St car park. |
Tourist Information Centre
|
| The TIC is in Craven Court, off the High St. They have whole stacks
of free leaflets on nearby attractions, can help with accomodation,
and will give advice on just about anything tourist related. They sell a good
streetmap of the town for 40p, and a Town guide for £1.They do not have a website.

Vet |
| There is a veterinary service called Kingsway, on Otley Rd, right on the
edge of town. Related Skiptonweb pages
